Foundation phase Curriculum

Children learn through play; it enables them to explore and make sense of the world around them, as well as to use and develop their imagination and creativity.  As such, play is integral to the work of the playgroup.  We plan a range of exciting and stimulating activities and experiences to support children’s development and ensure each area of the Foundation Phase is covered (visit for more information).

The team comes together every fortnight to share what we have observed and plan for the following two weeks. We look at the skills our children have and use the framework to plan activities and experiences to enhance learning in these focused areas.  We also plan our room provision to ensure we set up a variety of learning experiences that cover the whole of the curriculum.

The areas set out in the framework include:

  • Personal and Social development, Well-being and Cultural Diversity

  • Language, Literacy and Communication Skills

  • Mathematical Development

  • Welsh Language Development

  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World

  • Physical Development

  • Creative Development

We also use the Four Purposes of the Welsh Curriculum, which are:

All our children and young people will be...

  • Ambitious, capable learners

  • Enterprising, creative contributors

  • Ethical, informed citizens

  • Healthy, confident individuals
